Design Technology is an evolving, inspiring, practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that address real life issues and problems. Pupils acquire a broad range of subject knowledge, drawing on disciplines such as mathematics, science and art to develop effective designs.

At Priory all pupils study Food and Nutrition and Design Technology in KS3. Pupils explore a wide range of issues to enhance their knowledge and understanding before they work with wood, plastics, metal, electronics, fabric and food to apply their knowledge and ideas.They learn to work swiftly and efficiently and produce high quality products and have the chance to utilise new technologies including 2D Laser Cutting and 3D Printing. 

Pupils learn how to take risks; becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

Through the evaluation of past and present designs and artefacts, they develop a critical understanding of technology’s impact on daily life and the wider world. Design and Technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Pupils can opt to study GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition and GCSE Design Technology. The Department also teaches the Child Development Cambridge National course.

This course encourages students to use imagination and experimentation
to identify and solve design issues. Focusing on Product and Graphic based
design solutions built around realistic contexts, it enables young designers to explore, create, test, evaluate and refine ideas.

The course explores the core knowledge, different material areas and
understanding of both technical and design principles, which are applied to
practical situations so students experience a “hands on” approach.

Pedagogy style if relevant – ie: 90% of lessons are IT based, or we are 30% practical, 70% written etc.
Assessment for Design and Technology GCSE consists of a written examination and a design and make task (NEA). 

NEA (Non-Examined Assessment) Coursework 50%
A design and make project based around a context provided by the exam board…∙   – Sketch book to record research, initial ideas, testing and development∙
– Portfolio including a design specification, technical drawings, evaluations and modifications∙  
– Prototype of final product- made from timber, paper & board or polymers 
  
Please note: Only 15% of the NEA is for practical skills. 

Final Written Exam (2 hours) 50%
A two hour written paper in the final year summer exam session. It includes a mixture of short answer, structured and extended writing questions

Typical independent work and homework undertaken at KS4Homework will be set fortnightly in Yr9 and in Yr10 & Yr11 it will be set weekly.

Homework will be a mixture of SENECA to help develop core knowledge,
research and design tasks.

During Yr11 pupils will be expected to complete research at home as well as
attend after school workshops.

I have put in lots of images they don’t all need to be used! They are mainly of current GCSE students. The Food photos have names and candidate numbers on them they need to be edited off -I don’t know how to do this!

How am I assessed?
Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes• 50% of the qualification• This assesses the theory content of the course.

Food Preparation and Nutrition in Action
NEA 1: Investigation – 15% of the qualification• A scientific food investigation of 1500 words.

Examples of NEA 1
You are given a brief by the exam board and then choose an investigation to carry out. In the past we have had:
• Is it possible to reduce the sugar in cakes and still make an appetising product?
• Investigate the effects of using different fats when making pastry.• Which is the most effective way to thicken a sauce?

NEA 2: Food Preparation – 35% of the qualification
• You will prepare, cook and present three dishes that demonstrate how well you can choose, plan, prepare, cook and present food for a specific situation.
• There is a report of about 15 sides of A4 to accompany the practical work.


Examples of NEA 2

NEA 2 is when you get a chance to show off all the practical skills and techniques you have learned over the course. You are given a situation to cook for by the Exam Board.
This year the year 11s are cooking items that are suitable for a celebration of their choice, last year it was food suitable to take on a picnic. We have also had dishes for a chef’s competition, afternoon tea and dishes for an International evening at a local hotel.

Homework- This is mainly retrieval and recall of what we have learnt in the lessons. It might be some exam question practice or maybe using a website like Seneca.

Revision- There will be times where you need to revise topics for assessments and exams at home. 
NEA-The 2 pieces of coursework (NEA 1&2) will be mainly independent and student led. These are both done in Yr11.
Why perhaps I should not take Food as a GCSEIt is not just cooking – there is a lot of written work and theory to learn. It isn’t like cooking at home – you need to be able to stay calm and focused with other people sharing the kitchen unit with you.
You need to be able to work fast – the lessons can be very full on when we have to get dishes in the oven and everything cleaned up.
You have to be happy to clean up after yourself.
